Lauren and I have reviewed over 500 potential nursing home cases over the years and we see some problems over and over and over again. I decided we would share with our readers some of the more frequent problems...and the answers.

Problem #7: Can the staff at the nursing home tell you?

  • We don't have enough staff to accommodate everyone so you must wake up every morning at 6:00 AM; or
  • Because of our scheduling, you bath must always be at 2:00 PM.

The answer is again, "no." Freedom of choice is a vital part of a resident's quality of life. The Nursing Home Reform Act requires nursing homes to make "reasonable adjustments" to meet a resident's needs and preferences. A resident has the right to choose activities, schedules, and health care consistent with her or his interests. Problems like these should first be addressed at care plan meetings or during meetings of the resident's council.
