Did You Know Taxpayers Paid Bonuses to Bad Nursing Homes?

I didn't...until now. Tom Coburn is a medical doctor and a U.S. Senator from Oklahoma. On April 2 Senator Coburn released the following statement:

The public had every right to be outraged when AIG received $165 million in bonuses from public funds, yet few taxpayers realize the government has spent billions on improper bonuses for the defense industry, non-performing contractors and incompetent executives at places like Fannie Mae. The scandal of the government handing out improper bonuses to contractors and government executives dwarfs the scope of the AIG bonus scandal.

Next, he disclosed the following bomb shell:

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services pays more than $312 million per year in quality-of-care bonuses to nursing homes that provide below average care and have past violations of health-and-safety regulations.

My Question: Why is this just coming to light? How long have nursing homes been receiving "bonuses" for substandard and negligent care?

This really can;'t come as any surprise given the current bonus culture which I'm sure is of little relief to those families with relatives in these homes. Whereforcare.com is the childcare and senior care ratings and reviews information website where those who have experience of care, such as parents, relatives and professionals are encouraged to write about their experiences in order to help those who are looking to choose the right care.

This is crazy. A culture that is supposedly built on rewarding the deserving is really looking to be built on sand.
