The next time you are in a conversation about the reasonableness of hospital bills...throw out the number $43 billion. That's right... $43 billion is the amount of profit made by American hospitals in 2007. This represents the largest singe-year jump in profit margins in at least 15 years. And just who is telling these lies (ha) about the profitability of U.S. hospitals? Why the American Hospital Association.

In my area of Virginia, there is much discussion about the reasonableness of hospital bills issued by the massive Carilion Health System. Carilion runs the following hospitals;

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital,Carilion New River Valley Hospital, Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, and Tazewell Community Hospital.

My Question: How much profit did these hospitals make? Did they provide good medical care to those in need...even if they could not pay for it?
