The National Cancer Institute (NCI), which is part of the National Institutes of Health, has issued an announcement regarding an encouraging new treatment for women with advanced ovarian cancer.

The treatment involves delivering anti-cancer drugs into a vein and directly into the patient's abdomen. This has been found to extend overall survival for women with advanced ovarian cancer by about a year. More information about this encouraging advance in the treatment of ovarian cancer can be found at this link. Unfortunately, at the present time, the University of Virginia is the only hospital in Virginia offering this new treatment. Other medical centers convenient to patients in Southwest Virginia which offer this treatment are Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, the University of North Carolina Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC and the Wake-Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC.
